Try

jan@bison:~$ sudo -u postgres -s
postgres@bison:~$ psql
psql (9.4.4)
Type "help" for help.

postgres=# ALTER USER postgres PASSWORD 'postgres';
ALTER ROLE
postgres=# \q
postgres@bison:~$ exit
jan@bison:~$
