Ah, I understand better now, thanks.

I'm sure you have checked this already, but if the CLI to psql also 
fails, does this not indicate an issue with the server, and not 
necessarily pgadmin since pgadmin is not involved in this case?

FWIW My 1.14 pgadmin on OpenSUSE 11.4 works fine (with a few minor 
issues already noted) on local and remote servers. Backup and restore is ok.
