how about...

select ....   where translate(lower(myfield), 
'âãäåāăąèééêëēĕėęěìíîïìĩīĭóôõöōŏőùúûüũūŭů', 
'aaaaaaaeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiooooooouuuuuuu') = 'stringiwannamatch';


or something like that.   I may have miscounted the vowells in the 'to' 
string :)
