Yes, the main shift is that they now have a CLA in place, as well as a
promise to give fair compensation for any thing that is submitted. In
the past MySQL only really approached code out there (for example the
JDBC driver was acquired from the Community), but there was not a real
defined channel for people to approach MySQL with contributions.
Related to this is their plugin concept for storage engines, which is
going to allow new storage engines without a recompile in 5.1 to be
released in the next few months. The same will be possible for full text
as well. They are also documenting how to do this and certify this.
Obviously a lot of that has been possible with PostgreSQL long ago, like
tsearch proofs. But imho this is making the popular MySQL brand a
perfect marketing platform for third party companies [1].
