Hi...
Over the past month and a bit, PostgreSQL has been in a development
freeze in preparation for a v6.1 release.
Due to various *large* bugs that the developers felt could not, and
should not, be present in a release, we have been postponing the release
in one week segments while those bugs were worked out.
Last night, after 28hrs of straight coding, Vadim reports that he has
successfully purged the *last* major bug that we had outstanding, which means
that the release is "just around the corner".
As of midnight tonight, all the changes will be rolled into our
BETA tarball, which will also be considered the RELEASE tarball if all goes
well.
My plan is to convert *tomorrow* nights tarball into the RELEASE so
that everyone has a chance to test Vadim's changes, and report any changes to
him. *If* Vadim has to make a correction to his code, for whatever reason,
the RELEASE will be held off by one more day.
Once the RELEASE has been made, development will once more resume,
and hopefully improved ANSIfication will follow, as well as various code
cleanups (ala Purify)
It is *strongly* encouraged that anyone running a pre-v6.1 PostgreSQL
plan to upgrade to the newest version, as there were some pretty major bugs
fixed between v6.0 and v6.1, as well as overall performance improvements.
To those with CVS privileges...if the chngd.tar.gz file that is
created tomorrow night includes any changes, the RELEASE will be held off
by one day...if you have anything *cosmetic* you want added in, please do
so *before* tonights chngd.tar.gz file is created, or hold off until after
the RELEASE is out.
Thanks...
