In response to 8.1.3's /etc/init.d/postgresql fails, logging "standard in must be a tty"  (Jonathan Beit-Aharon <jbeitaharon@intrusic.com>)
List pgsql-general
Nevermind, the problem was resolved when I discovered a typo in the
postgresql.conf line of listen_address.
The postgres message in /var/log/messages turned out to be more useful
than the one in the log file named by the start command.

Thanks for responding!
Jonathan
