Fixing postmaster (7.2->7.4.8) - Mailing list pgsql-novice

Well it was brutal, but it worked.

I deleted the data files, apt-removed postgresql, used 'find' to find
and delete anything else postgresql,
and apt-(re)installed .. to find I had a working postgresql.
