/usr/local/lib probably is not in your library path.
Try the following commands before running initdb (or any other pg
program for that matter):
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib:/lib:/usr/lib:/usr/ccs/lib
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
