Is it better to use pg_ctl to shutdown postmaster rather than 'kill -9'?
  If so, perhaps the INSTALL file should be updated, as it suggests
using 'kill `cat /usr/local/pgsql/datapostmaster.pid`' to shut it down.

Your message says that's tip #4; where can I find the others?
