problem compiling under AIX 4.2 - Mailing list pgsql-admin

I am trying to compile Postgresql 6.4 on an RS/6000  model 380 running
AIX
4.2

For a compiler and make utility I am using GNU version 2.8

I have been able to run the configure script without any apparent
problems
but when I try to execute the command

     gmake all >& make.log &

I get the following error message:

KSH: make.log 0403-007 Generated or received a file descriptor number
that is not valid

I am stumped.
