Here's a draft. It's plain text, since it's going to a mailing list.
Hello,
I'd like to ask whether the postcode extension could be packaged for apt.postgresql.org.
It provides compact, B-tree-indexable PostgreSQL types for postal codes: postcode for UK postcodes, and since 2.0, postal_code for 194 ISO countries and territories. Prefix and district matching run as ordinary index range scans. New country formats are added with SQL, with no C needed. The postal_code segment in 2. is entirely new, and the original patchsoft code overhauled for both functionality and correctness.
- Repository: https://github.com/John-Cameron-Burns/pg-uk-postcodes
- PGXN: https://pgxn.org/dist/postcode
- Licence: BSD-2-Clause
- Current release: 2.0.1, tagged v2.0.1
- Supports PostgreSQL 14 to 18; CI runs the regression suite on each version
- Build system: standard PGXS
Dave Green (patchsoft) wrote the original and it was orphaned on PGXN. I have been trying for about 5 years to contact Dave Green, and David Wheeler of PGXN could not reach him and made me a co-owner, so I maintain it and make releases. I'm the contact for any packaging issues.
For packaging, I will add a debian/ directory using dh --with=pgxs, with debian/watch for the v* tags and a machine-readable debian/copyright
Could you tell me whether it's a good fit for PGDG, and whether you'd prefer the debian/ directory in the upstream repository or in a separate packaging repository? I'm happy to adjust anything the packaging needs.
Thank you,
John Burns
