Testing shows:

    SELECT current_setting('asdf', true);
     current_setting
    -----------------
    
    
    \pset null (null)
    
    SELECT current_setting('asdf', true);
     current_setting
    -----------------
-->     (null)

How do you like the attached patch, which clarifies this?
