why don't you append to the system set value of the var.
In RH (this week) we do this in /etc/profile.d/localpath.sh
but shirley ubuntu has some means for doing this:
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/lib"
