For reference I am using postgres 8.4.

When I create a database and specify the encoding and collation why is it necessary to also set the Ctype?

Or alternatively when I set the collation and Ctype why do I need to set the encoding?

What is the difference between the Ctype and the encoding, and why are they both necessary?

Thanks.
