== PostgreSQL Weekly News - May 17th 2004 == Development remained at a good pace as people prepared for the oncoming 7.5 beta period. Work continued on some of the bigger items like PITR and win32, and we also got a first look at the tablespaces implementation. While not ready for official submittal, Gavin Sherry posted a patch along with some unresolved issues to serve as the next step forward for this often requested feature. A couple of bugs were fixed and back-patched into the 7.4 tree, which started rumblings of a potential 7.4.3 release in the next few weeks. While there was no definitive date set, with beta coming soon it is more than likely we will have one in the next few weeks; in the mean time here is a run down on this weeks fixes. An efficiency problem in executor startup related to some low-level aclcheck code was re-factored. A possible buffer overrun in enlargeStringInfo() was corrected. A bug when unioning zero column tables was fixed. Some issues in thread support for unixware were addressed. Looking at some other areas where new functionality was added, support was introduced for "relocatable installs" which allows users to move entire install directory structures and allows all of the PostgreSQL executables to work. External modules (like pl langs) can now set additional flags for the dlltool and dllwrap commands. A basic implementation of the SQL2003 spec function width_bucket() was implemented for the 'numeric' datatype. The ln(), log(), power(), and sqrt() were modified to emit the correct SQLSTATE error codes for certain error conditions as specified by SQL2003. Last but not least, some documentation for the new "dollar quoting" feature was added in and several examples were updated to show the new style. == PostgreSQL Product News == new version of contrib/pg_trgm is available! http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-hackers/2004-05/msg00646.php my2pg 1.30 released http://freshmeat.net/projects/my2pg/?branch_id=6864&release_id=161008 == PostgreSQL In the News == The Open Source Government http://www.linuxinsider.com/story/online/33794.html A start to programming enterprise applications with Linux, Java and PostgreSQL http://searchenterpriselinux.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid39_gci962881,00.html libpqxx simplifies PostgreSQL C++ programming http://www.devchannel.org/article.pl?sid=04/05/11/1720258 == Upcoming Events == NLUUG Open Source for Business: Ede, Netherlands: May 27 Elein Mustain will be speaking on PostgreSQL Extensibility http://www.nluug.nl/events/vj04/ European Regional Open Source Conference: Yerevan, Armenia: June 28-30 Bruce Momjian will be speaking at the Conferance http://www.opensourcearmenia.com/osconference OSCon: Portland, OR.
