I've been using pl/perl in production for up to 3 years on some projects.   My
first thought would be that it's a problem with Perl on Debian/unstable, not
a problem with PostgreSQL.

I'd suggest that you do a gdb trace and post it to pgsql-bugs to get feedback
on where the issue lies.
