The above indicates that your /etc/passwd (and possibly /etc/group) is
not set up correctly. Do you have these files and are they correct? If
not, then perform the following:
$ mkpasswd -l >/etc/passwd
$ mkgroup -l >/etc/group
Does initdb work now?
