Ok, BLOBS may go.  But if they stay, can they not be stored
all in the same directory?  With a fixed rule for making 
subdirectories (i.e. xinv/00 xinv/01 .. where number is last
8 bits of oid, or some sort of hash) then users can spread
the size of the data out over lots of partitions using
softlinks.
