error 3073 - Mailing list pgsql-interfaces

I have a problem executing an update statement.

I'm using
    postgresql 6.3.1 on Linux
    postgres95 6.30.0246 on Windows 95
    VB5.0.

An INSERT command is succesful.

But a command such as
    UPDATE area SET area_name='654' WHERE area_id='123';
Results
    Operation must use an updatable query. (Error 3073)
