Once possibility is to use Double.parseDouble(s).byteValue()
so the code would become

Byte.parseByte(s)
}
catch(NumberFormatException e)
{
try
{
return Double.parseDouble(s).ByteValue();
}
catch( NumberFormatException ne )
{
throw exception;
}
}
