Thank you, that was it. We upgraded to 8.4.6 and the problem went away.

Perhaps you ran into the cost_limit problem that was fixed in 8.4.6?

I don't think you've offered any proof that the stats collector was
stuck.  Waiting for a message would be its normal state.
