I tried this and I get an error that

'psql: FATAL: role "postgres" does not exist'

Well step by step is a bit exhaustive for a mailing list. To solve the
specific question the default user is postgres and the default super user
within postgresql is postgres. Try this:

sudo -u postgres psql
